Web development agencies are the worst. We don't know how to build reliable websites. And we don't know it's the most important thing to our clients. But here's how we can fix it.

I finally finished a book project. Three factors made it happen. One, I wrote at four in the morning. Two, I wrote for my audience instead of myself. And three, I wrote it using Trello.

If you’re one of the rare people in the world that read my last post, you’ll know that I had the audacity to suggest designing the homepage of your website as the last page. So, what should the first page you design be?

I’ve definitely forgotten more homepages than I remember. I think I hit around 300 webdev projects a few years ago and stopped paying attention. With the exception of software applications, most of these projects involved the strategy and design for a homepage. I’ve spent countless hours on wireframes, content strategy and navigation schemes for homepages. And even more hours consulting with clients about their hopes, dreams and fears about their homepage. It’s the universally accepted place to start for a webdev project.

Like most everyone else, I barely remember life without a microwave oven. The first one I owned had a dial with a timer that started the microwave as soon as I turned it. Now, microwaves are feature-rich with special buttons for defrosting meat, left overs, popcorn, and potatoes. I even saw one with a button for “roasted chicken.” Who’s using that!?

All clients have problems that need solving, to be sure. Though, most of what I do as a strategist doesn’t involve giving advice or “solutions” for a digital product. I really just ask questions…lots of questions. Sometimes I ask the same question over and over again in slightly different ways until I’m satisfied with the answer.
