Overview

Palouse Specialty Physicians, a regional healthcare provider, faced an unexpected crisis: their former developer shut down their website. This website wasn’t just a marketing tool; it was critical to their business operations. Patients used it to pay bills online - generating thousands in monthly revenue - and access critical physician information for appointments and care.

Their previous developer, who had initially built the site, had taken it offline, leaving Palouse without a website.

When Palouse contacted Solspace, they were looking for an experienced team to help them recover critical functions as soon as possible.

Urgent Restoration

At 2 PM on a Friday, we received an email from Palouse Specialty Physicians in distress—their website had gone offline. They’d been given 60 days by their previous developer to find a new partner, but after struggling to find support, their site was ultimately shut down, leaving patients unable to access doctor information or pay bills.

Solspace quickly sprang into action. The initial assets provided by the previous developer were incomplete, with the critical database missing.

While reaching out to the former developer for a database backup, we used resources like The Wayback Machine to piece together content as a backup plan.

The Hidden Challenges

So with what we had, we began reviewing the site's technical setup, and an unexpected challenge quickly emerged. The site had been developed as a “headless” Craft CMS website - a choice that, while technically impressive, was unnecessarily complex for Palouse’s needs.

A headless CMS splits the system into two parts - one to manage content, one to display it. It's useful when you need to push the same content to multiple places: your website, mobile app, digital kiosks. But Palouse just needed a website. The architecture was overkill.

This is a pattern we see too often: a previous developer choosing a technology because it's impressive, not because it solves the client's actual problem. The result? A sophisticated but unnecessarily complex setup that made simple updates difficult and locked out other developers.

Maze of challenges

Database Secured, Full Site Restored

By Saturday, the previous developer provided the missing database, enabling us to restore full website functionality.

Our team worked through the technical complexity of the headless Craft CMS setup, configuring and testing locally to ensure the website could be brought online seamlessly.

However, even with the website fully restored locally, we faced a final hurdle: gaining control of the domain’s DNS settings, which required coordination with Palouse’s IT team.

Their DNS had been secured tightly, so we navigated this final step carefully to bring the restored website live by the end of the weekend.

Restoring Reliability and Trust

Solspace was able to restore Palouse’s website, helping them overcome an over-engineered solution. We bridged technical gaps with clear, honest communication, bringing their online operations back to life and offering long-term stability.

From Emergency to Partnership

That weekend restoration could have been the end of our relationship. One emergency fix, invoice sent, everyone moves on.

But Palouse Specialty Physicians is still our client today - more than a year later. Not because they had another emergency, but because they saw how we work under pressure.

When you need someone at 2 PM on a Friday and they actually show up, you remember that.

Palouse isn't unique. 55% of our long-term clients started exactly like this - with an urgent problem and a developer who let them down. What happens after the emergency is what makes the difference.
