Super Search & Other Discontinued Add-ons Now Open Source
With the ongoing difficulty of developing, supporting and maintaining software that is financially viable, we needed to make the difficult decision to discontinue several of our underperforming add-ons this past year. Some of our more notable discontinued add-ons have been Importer, Friends and Facebook Connect.
Today however, we regretfully announce the discontinuation of Super Search also. As noted in a previous blog post, with ongoing development, maintenance, support and rewrite costs factored in, a portion of our add-ons have been unprofitable for a while now. While Super Search was converted to EE3 already, it still had sluggish sales and a high support burden (partially due to the wild and complex things our customers were doing with it!). It’s also no secret that the very smart and powerful Low Search add-on has been a strong competitor.
On the other hand, we do have some very popular add-ons (such as Freeform Pro and Calendar) that continue to perform well for us. We remain committed to our add-ons and the ExpressionEngine community. By scaling back our offering of add-ons, we’re able to focus on our remaining ones and continue to improve them at a faster pace. We have already completely redesigned and rebuilt Calendar from scratch, and in the coming months we hope to announce something exciting for ExpressionEngine!
All that said, existing Super Search customers still continue to have access to 2 years support for their purchased licenses. For those that wish to continue to use Super Search (both EE2 and EE3 versions) and install it on new sites, it is now open source under the extremely flexible MIT License.
We deeply apologize for the inconvenience we have caused. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
